Part 4 of 4: Becoming a PR Expert – Speed Dating the Media

Jeff:  So, how does one get to

know the media?

Erin:  The old cliché really plays here, it’s not really what you know, it’s who you know.  You need publicity to get publicity.

Here are some Do’s and Don’ts when working with the media:

Do’s:

Ask them if “this is a good time to talk” when they answer the phone

Give them stats and story ideas that they have never thought of

Be an original expert in your space – do something unique in your industry

Write a thank you note after your interview

Do get turned down gracefully – not everyone is going to get every booking

Don’t:

Phone and email 20 times a day – that isn’t pitching, it’s stalking

Fib to the media.  They will catch you in every embellishment you throw their way

Bring an entourage to a TV interview – it’s not even cool when rap stars do it J

Ask what your questions will be for your interview

Don’t forget to have fun – after all, you have worked really hard – enjoy the ride!!
