Top 10 Things to Do in South Dakota
With Sturgis right around the corner and visitors from all over the world visiting Mount Rushmore each year, I’ve put together a list of things to do while you’re visiting our great state.
- Eat a buffalo burger and slice of pie at Al’s Oasis. It’s a great resting stop between Chamberlain and Oacoma, SD.
- Drink free ice water at Wall Drug and watch one of the mechanical music shows.
- Count the blue marble tiles in the State Capital floor. Trust me! It’s more than just counting tiles.
- Dance at a street dance (and avoid driving anywhere near a street dance if dancing isn’t for you!)
- No visit is complete without attending a powwow. They’re awesome events, filled with drumming, dancing, and tradition. You may even get the chance to sample Indian fry bread!
- Watch the reenactment of Wild Bill Hickok’s death at the No. 10 Saloon. It’s also a great opportunity to learn about the history of Deadwood and the wild old west.
- Hunt pheasants and fish for walleyes. Just don’t get the wild idea of starting up your own pheasant farm.
- Over 500,000 tourists stop by Mitchell, SD every year to see the Corn Palace. Plan your trip for August to enjoy the Corn Palace Festival!
- Ride in the Custer buffalo roundup. It is truly a one-of-a-kind old west experience with nearly 1,300 bison thundering towards the corrals.
- Relax and smell the prairie grass. It’s a beautiful state!
